Carolina Panthers coach Ron Rivera is ready to go, and it appears he’s not alone as the team started preparation for the 2012 season with its seven draft picks signed and participating in last week’s team workouts.

“It’s really neat going to be able to have these guys in from day one,” said Rivera, the Panthers’ second-year coach who, along with linebacker Jon Beason and other team representatives, visited Camp Lejeune on Tuesday in an event organized by the USO of North Carolina.

“We started last week with our rookie mini-camp, and to have them all there and competing for us and developing as football players is really great.”

One reason it was easier than most years for the Panthers to sign all their rookies was the new collective bargaining agreement between the league and the NFL Players Association that ended the lockout last summer.

Under the new CBA, rookies are paid less than veterans until they have established themselves, where before rookies could sign lucrative contracts before ever playing a down in the NFL.

“It’s a sign of the times now with the new collective bargaining agreement that’s there’s really no reason for anybody to hold out because everybody is slotted as far as their salaries are concerned,” Rivera said.

“I think it’s going to be good for football and good for us because we are a young football team and we need to get these guys in the fold as soon as possible.”

One of those rookies is Boston College linebacker Luke Kuechly, who was picked in the first round in April’s draft as the ninth overall choice. Kuechly is expected to compete for a starting job in Carolina’s deep linebacker unit, which includes Beason and Thomas Davis.

Both Beason (Achilles’ tendon) and Davis (left ACL) were out last year with injuries.

“Part of bringing Luke in was really to elevate more depth and a little more security (at linebacker). Last year we lost a couple of guys that play a big part in what we do … and it (injuries) was really hard on our football team, especially on our defense,” Rivera said.

“We feel very confident in that group of guys, and getting Jon Beason back and Thomas Davis back, I think it’s going to be outstanding that we are going to do a lot of things with that group and we expect them to make an impact for us.”

Beason likes Kuechly being a Panther.

“When you’re drafted high, there’s a lot of expectations and he knows that,” he said. “He’s got big (expectations) and I’m sure he’s going to come in and compete. Competition is always good.”

But the Panthers don’t just want to compete in 2012. They want to take the next step in becoming a legitimate contender in an already tough NFC South division. Carolina went 6-10 last year with six losses by eight points or less. The Panthers also lost several fourth-quarter leads.

“The biggest thing is learning how to finish football games. You go back and look at it, we led in 14 of 16 games,” Rivera said. “I think in 10 of those 16 games we were actually able to have the lead in the fourth quarter. One of the best things that happened to us was the way we played against the Houston Texas, a playoff-caliber football team.”

Rivera was referring to the Panthers’ 28-13 victory at Houston in December.

“We came into the fourth quarter with the lead and we put it away,” he said. “We’ve taken some big steps, but the biggest thing is to continue to grow as a football team.”

Beason came just short of saying that not much separated the Panthers from the Super Bowl champion New York Giants, which ended the regular season at 9-7.

“First off, you look at the team that won the Super Bowl, and a lot of times it has to do with luck. When you say luck it means in terms of guys staying healthy,” Beason said. “We got hit with injuries fairly early in the season, and having to transition to a new coach and new schemes, we had a lot of stuff stacked up against us. But for the most part, I’m proud of what the guys who did step up and play for us did.”

Given that, Beason thinks this season can be a special one in Charlotte. The Panthers open the season Sept. 9 at Tampa Bay.

“Everytime someone puts a (microphone) in my face I tell them we are going to win the Super Bowl,” he said. “Part of that has to do with adding pressure, not just to my team, but on my shoulders. I think anytime you do that and folks think that way, you have to step up and I’m looking forward to the challenge.”

Quarterback Cam Newton is a big reason the Panthers were interesting to watch last year after going 2-14 the previous year. Newton won The Associated Press NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year award after setting an NFL record for touchdowns rushing in a season by a quarterback with 14 and became the first player in league history to throw for 4,000 yards and rush for 500.

“We do expect more from him,” Rivera said. “We are tied to him as a football organization and as he grows and gets better, we should grow and get better as a football organization.”

Remote sites for potential wind farms are not exactly the types of fields you picture a retired NFL linebacker scouting. But Sean Tufts is not your typical retired football player. Nor is he your classic promoter of wind energy as the nation’s primary source of renewable energy.

It’s what sets the 30-year-old Colorado native apart from others in both arenas.

“I’m able to use football to tell my story to customers and sell myself as unique,” says Tufts, who played on the Carolina Panthers from 2004 to 2006.

What’s he selling? As development manager of RES Americas, he helps pitch utilities on the potential of harnessing the wind’s energy to provide electricity to consumers, he says. “It helps with sales. It’s a way to be remembered.”

Before joining RES Americas two years ago, he co-owned a company that convinced landowners to allow wind farms on their land.

While capitalizing on the skills he learned as a football player — traits that include tenacity, drive and teambuilding — he’s keen to the skepticism others have when dealing with former professional athletes.

“I get asked a lot if I’m an engineer,” Tufts says. He went on to say that he believes the energy field covers “two defenses,” the land field and the science field. He’s set his sights on the former.

“I am working with a team. They are the experts in perfecting wind farms.” Tufts serves as project manager for the company’s wind farms in Kansas, Oklahoma and Texas. He organizes and oversees a small team who handle engineering, permitting, financing and transmission issues.

It’s a position of respect he’s earned from having returned to his old alma mater, the University of Colorado, for his MBA in renewable energy and finance.

When knee injuries forced him from the Carolina Panthers and into the workforce in 2006, he quickly realized he was being sized up by potential employers, Tufts recalls. He understands the stereotype of former NFLers who use their football career as a crutch instead of a lever, he says.

That’s all the news for today.

The group will get a taste of life on base as they will not only share a meal with the Marines, they will also take part in a special workout session with the Semper Fit Mobile Unit and active duty Marines of the 9th Marines.

John Falkenbury, President USO of North Carolina was quoted as saying of tomorrow’s visit, “The Carolina Panthers and the USO of NC have a long and enduring partnership that ensures all our North Carolina service members have the opportunity to take part in Panther Training Camps and game day events, like the Military Appreciation Day game with on-field troop participation, as well as base visits. Even though Camp Lejeune is more than five hours away, the Carolina Panthers felt it was extremely important to spend time with our Marines and Sailors on their home field – learning more about their day-to-day operations and the sacrifices they and their families make each day. The USO of NC is honored to have been able to help in this effort,”

Running low on time today, i’ll be back tomorrow hopefully with some more news.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Luke Kuechly has a new number and, at least for now, a new position with the Carolina Panthers.

Before his first NFL practice, Kuechly received No. 59 — the same number his new coach, Ron Rivera, wore during his nine seasons with the Chicago Bears — and was told he’ll start out playing weakside linebacker. That’s a change from the middle linebacker spot Kuechly primarily played at Boston College, where he wore No. 40 and led the nation in tackles the last two seasons.

For now, the Panthers plan to keep three-time Pro Bowl selection Jon Beason at middle linebacker — although things could change before the start of the season. Beason is hoping to return from a torn Achilles.

“We’ll start out with (Kuechly) on the outside, and Jon will be on the inside,” Rivera said of the Panthers’ first-round draft pick. “I’ve talked with Jon about playing inside and outside. It will be an interesting experiment as we go through this. Quite frankly, we want to make sure we put the best combination of players on the football field.”

The Panthers already have a tremendous talent in former first-round pick Thomas Davis at weakside linebacker, but he has torn his right anterior cruciate ligament three times in the past three years. Kuechly could be his replacement.

Regardless of where Kuechly ends up, there’s little doubt the Panthers have big plans for him.

“You have to come in with the mindset that you’re at the bottom of the totem pole now,” Kuechly said. “There will be guys that have been here 10 or 15 years and you have to gain their respect. You can’t come in thinking that you’ve arrived because you haven’t done anything yet. You have to prove what you can do.”

The Panthers put Kuechly’s football intelligence to the test during his first day on the practice field, working him both at weakside and middle linebacker. Rivera said Kuechly handled it well, just as he expected.

“He looked good,” Rivera said. “We put some pressure on him to learn both positions, but we think he’s that kind of football player and that kind of athlete that can handle it. It will be interesting to see how he meshes with the rest of the guys on defense.”

Linebacker Luke Kuechly, the No. 9 overall selection in the 2012 NFL Draft, agreed to a four-year, $12.58 million contract with the Carolina Panthers on Thursday, a source with knowledge of the situation told NFL Network’s Michael Lombardi.

Kuechly is the highest 2012 draft pick to agree to a contract thus far. The Seattle Seahawks’ Bruce Irvin (No. 15) and San Diego Chargers’ Melvin Ingram (No. 18) are the only other first-round picks to agree to terms on contracts.

When the Panthers selected Kuechly last month out of Boston College, NFL Network analyst Mike Mayock said: “I call him Clark Kent, and he can turn into Superman on Saturdays and Sundays. He’s one of the cleanest players in this draft. His instincts and his pass-coverage ability might be the best of any linebacker I’ve seen come out of the draft.”

Along with Kuechly, the Panthers also agreed to terms with guard Amini Salotolu from Midwestern State (40th overall), defensive end Frank Alexander from Oklahoma (103rd overall), punt returner Joe Adams (104th overall), cornerback Josh Norman from Coastal Carolina (143rd overall), punter Brad Nortman (207th overall) and safety D.J. Campbell (216th overall).

However, the Panthers will get their first look at Kuechly and it will be interesting to see where he lines up.

Carolina wasted no time selecting Kuechly but coach Ron Rivera wouldn’t say where he plans to play him, saying only that his versatility and ability to play all three linebacker positions is one of the main reasons they chose the two-time All-America selection from Boston College.

“We’re going to look at it, we really are, and just see how it all meshes,” Rivera said. “This is one of those picks where it makes your group better and your unit better. The reason we drafted the kid is he has tremendous versatility.

“Whether he’s playing the Sam, the Mike or the Will for us, this guy has an opportunity to make an impact for us. We’re going to put the best football players on the field and we’re going to play them.”

Charlotte, N.C.–The Carolina Panthers announced Tuesday that the team has signed punter Nick Harris.

Harris, 6-2 and 218 pounds, is a veteran of 11 NFL seasons and played in 11 games with Jacksonville last season.

With the Jaguars, Harris generated a 42.7-yard gross average and a 37.9-yard net average on 72 punts with 13 downed inside the 20-yard line.

Since beginning his NFL career with Cincinnati in 2001, Harris has placed 239 of his 876 career punts inside the 20-yard line.

The 239 punts inside the 20 are the fourth-most in the NFL during that time.

Harris spent 2003-10 with the Detroit Lions and is the franchise’s record holder in punts (627), punting yards (27,073) and punts inside the 20-yard line (189).

As a huge Carolina Panthers fan, it is very easy to get excited about the coming 2012 season. Even before we had Cam Newton, getting fired up for a new season was easy. A new season means renewed hope and excitement, as well as the chance to see how your favorite team improved. It also brings with it a ton of questions. The Carolina Panthers have some exciting questions to be answered in 2012. The majority of those questions are on defense, but there are also some interesting developments on offense.

What role will Mike Tolbert fill for the Carolina Panthers?

When you consider the Carolina Panthers will have DeAngelo Williams, Jonathan Stewart and Mike Tolbert as running backs entering the 2012 season, it is kind of scary for the opposition. Then when you toss in Cam Newton for good measure, it almost seems unfair. The rushing attack in Carolina should be extremely good, but how it will flesh out is kind of unclear. It seems very clear that Mike Tolbert will play fullback, but you can’t help but to envision the wishbone or a veer offense. Though it is not realistic as a regular offense, it certainly could be put in here and there just for a change up. The Panthers certainly did things like that in 2011.

Another question is who will carry the pigskin at the goal line? I guess they have about twenty choices which is a good thing. I imagine Mike Tolbert will take on most of that and take some pressure off of Cam to push it in. While that would cut into Cam’s touchdowns, it would also lengthen his career. Every hit he can avoid means a longer shelf life.

Will David Gettis come back better than ever?

Every Carolina Panthers fan that I know has wondered about how Gettis will do with Cam Newton under center. Gettis had a pretty decent year as a rookie and that was without Cam. This could be an explosive combination if Gettis still has that burst down the field. This is less about Gettis and more about the machine that is growing in Carolina. With so many weapons, trying to keep up with Gettis heading down the field vertically is going to challenge any defense.

Can Joe Adams become a vertical threat also?

Speaking of challenging a defense, how about this kid? If he can step in and learn the position that Steve Smith made famous in his early days, look out. By all means they need to shore up the special teams and Adams should be the cornerstone. I see Devin Hester here and hope that he can fulfill half that promise. Whatever the case, he can still put more pressure on a defense by inserting him in the slot or stretching the field vertically. If he can do that and catch the ball regularly, the Panthers offense will be even better.

A significant number of Carolina Panthers fans were expecting them to draft a hulking defensive tackle with their first round pick in the 2012 NFL Draft.

A significant number of Carolina Panthers fans were expecting them to draft a hulking defensive tackle with their first round pick in the 2012 NFL Draft. Instead the Panthers went after Boston College linebacker Luke Kuechly. Though he is not the guy that fans expected, he is still looking like a wonderful pick. As a huge Carolina Panthers fan myself, I can easily see how he will improve our defense in a number of ways.

Luke Kuechly will be a tackling machine

Kuechly is a guy that will chase the ball from sideline to sideline and catch who he is chasing most of the time. I watched him slaughter the ACC competition for years here in Carolina and can vouch that the guy is for real. He has a nose for the ball that you simply can’t teach.

Luke Kuechly gives Jon Beason room to take more chances

Jon Beason is a guy that makes huge plays when he has someone to back his play. This is why he was so much more effective over the years with Thomas Davis in the lineup. The guy can run around and make plays with someone speedy there to cover his mistakes. This is including jumping the occasional gap to stuff a play on a hunch. Kuechly and his speed will allow that for Beason again and possibly Davis as well.

Luke Kuechly will give the Panthers awesome linebacker depth

I think that Kuechly will start right off. Jon Beason may move to the outside or Kuechly might man that slot. Either way, I think Kuechly will start over Davis thanks to his many injuries. No matter where they all play, Kuechly, Beason, Davis, James Anderson and Jordan Senn are looking pretty darn good to me right now.

Luke Kuechly will improve our safeties immediately

Kuechly is a run stuffer for certain, but he is also a superior pass defender. Because he is so solid in both areas, that will take some strain off of our safeties. This should allow us to stop the run without having to also stuff the box all the time. This can only help with our pass coverage.

Though our defense will still have plenty of struggles in Carolina, Kuechly should be able to improve things a great deal. Between his arrival and several other players returning from injuries, the Panthers could be much better on defense in 2012.

NFL Network insider Jason La Canfora confirmed, citing a source with knowledge of the situation, that Jones is visiting with the Carolina Panthers on Thursday. John McClain of the Houston Chronicle first reported the news. It’s an ideal fit for Jones because the Panthers’ depth chart is fairly wide open after No. 1 receiver Steve Smith.

Brandon LaFell is projected to start; he has been up and down as a pro. David Gettis, Kealoha Pilares and rookie Joe Adams figure to be reserves. Jones has value because he can help on returns and at wide receiver. Adams also figures to get a lot of return work.

Whether the Panthers sign Jones or not, we wouldn’t expect to see Armanti Edwards back in Carolina next season.

CHARLOTTE, N.C.– Mike Asiedu , a two-time All-American, received an invitation, but no contract, from the Carolina Panthers of the National Football League, to join them for their rookie minicamp May 11-13.

The former Wolverine will join the Panthers’ seven draft picks, 12 rookie free agent signees and other invitees for the camp. The draftees and free agent signees include five wide receivers, three offensive lineman, three defensive lineman, three running backs, a pair of defensive backs, a tight end, a punter and first-round linebacker Luke Kuechly. Asiedu (2008-11) assumed a starting position late in his freshman season and never looked back.

The native of Yonkers, N.Y., then led the Wolverines in tackles as a sophomore and was named Second Team All-Region and First Team All-ACFC. Among his highlights from the season was an interception on a two-point conversion attempt and taking it back 102 yards for two points. It is tied for the longest play in school-history.

As a junior, the 6-foot-3, 220 pound linebacker earned All-America recognition for the first time in his career after finishing with 79 tackles, 10.5 tackles for loss and a team-high 10 pass breakups.

Asiedu wrapped up his career in 2011 by earning All-America honors once again after making 83 tackles and intercepting three passes, both of which were second on the squad.

In his four seasons on the Dover campus, Asiedu totaled 274 tackles with 31 coming for loss. He also picked off five passes, forced seven fumbles and recovered three.

Whitehall High School graduate and former University of Michigan defensive end Ryan Van Bergen agreed to join the NFLs Carolina Panthers as an undrafted free agent following the NFL draft last weekend.

The son of Toni and Chuck Van Bergen both Hart High School graduates was at his parents home in Whitehall when he was contacted by the Panthers after they made their last selection in the middle of the seventh and final round Saturday. He said the Panthers acknowledged they didnt have any draft picks remaining, but were interested in signing him as a free agent. Van Bergen said the Baltimore Ravens and the Indianapolis Colts also showed interested in the late going, but werent willing to offer him a contract until the draft was over.

To me, it just seemed like Carolina had the most interest in me so I thought it would be a good situation, Van Bergen said. I feel good. It was a weird process (going through the draft).

Amini Silatolu is not the player the Carolina Panthers were expected to draft in the second round. When you look at him, he is your typical looking lineman. He went to a less than impressive Division II school in Wichita Falls, Texas. He was unable to qualify academically for Nevada and did not play ball at all in 2009. So what makes him better than average and worth the Carolina Panthers spending a second round pick on him in the 2012 NFL Draft? Amini Silatolu is a guy that will put the opposition down rather than simply getting in people’s way. He likes to bury the defense that is in front of him. That nasty streak is something that pro scouts love, and the Panthers in particular expressed a clear interest in when they drafted him.

Can Amini Silatolu dominate at the NFL level?

This is the one question that keeps coming up every time you read a column or opinion about the pick. Silatolu played at a level that typically does not translate well to the next level. Then again, offensive linemen tend to rise or fall to the level of competition they are playing against. The Panthers are banking on Silatolu being able to handle whoever is placed in front of him. Though he played tackle in college, he will likely take the guard position that was left when the Panthers released veteran Travelle Wharton in early 2012. That transition is one that he should be able to make rather easily.

Did Carolina mess up taking a no-name guy in the second round?

This totally depends on who you ask, but the fact is Silatolu is only unknown to fans because he is a lineman. Not many fans keep up with the latest news on offensive linemen that play at division II schools. To NFL scouts and those around the NFL, Silatolu was on the radar. The biggest concern I have with the pick is that the Panthers left an even bigger need uncovered by not drafting any defensive tackles at all. This was largely considered to be the biggest need for the Panthers coming into the 2012 NFL draft. The Panthers are either counting on a big jump in performance from their existing tackles, or they are planning on a free agent move or two.

The Carolina Panthers know offensive linemen

I have great faith in the pick myself because of the Panthers’ history of drafting solid offensive linemen. Byron Bell showed that in 2011 as he stepped right in and did a great job for the Panthers. With the solid running game the Panthers boast annually, the offensive linemen have always been a focus in Carolina. Wharton was starting to get way too expensive for his performance level, so this has been in the cards for some time. In the end, I think Silatolu will pay off handsomely.

After a December Panthers practice, head coach Ron Rivera ducked into general manager Marty Hurney’s office and glanced at the video screen.

Hurney was watching Amini Silatolu, a 320-pound offensive lineman at Division II Midwestern State University, a school perhaps best known as the alma mater of Dr. Phil McGraw.

“You’ve got to watch this kid,” Rivera remembers Hurney telling him.

“(Silatolu) came down the line and there was this linebacker and he ran him. We call it black line. You take a guy and take him outside the black line of the screen and he was just gone. That was impressive.”

He wasn’t playing against SEC-caliber competition but it was how Silatolu played – with a nasty streak – that jumped off the screen to both Hurney and Rivera.

Four months later, the Panthers used their second-round draft pick to select Silatolu, who they expect to compete with free agent signee Mike Pollak for the starting right spot left open after the release of Travelle Wharton.

“This was the guy we wanted to get,” Hurney said of Silatolu.

Given the focus on improving one of the league’s lowest-ranked defenses, the selection of Silatolu was a mild surprise given his relative obscurity and the needs at defensive line and secondary.

Unable to make a trade to secure a third-round pick, the Panthers will have five picks in the four remaining rounds of the draft Saturday. Carolina will have two picks in the sixth round. They are likely to concentrate on adding defensive players though Hurney said the team will pick the best available players.

Silatolu’s road to Charlotte has been a winding one.

The son of Tonga natives who moved from the South Pacific island to California in 1985, Silatolu doesn’t have the big-time college football pedigree of most draftees.

He started at San Joaquin Delta College near his family’s home in Tracy, Cal., before signing with Nevada. He didn’t qualify academically to play football at Nevada so he wound up sitting out football in the fall of 2009.

“I was still home in Tracy. My junior college was in (nearby) Stockton,” Silatolu said. “I was commuting and had some classes to take. That was the first time I was on a break from football for years before that.

“It was depressing. I was sitting at home. ’09 was a bad year all around. I lost my grandma and my uncle. It was a crazy year and that fall kind of motivated me. I wanted to get out of town, go somewhere far (away) and Texas was a great fit.”

At Midwestern State, Silatolu was almost a force of nature. Playing left tackle, he had an overall blocking grade of 94.7 percent, the only draft-eligible lineman with a mark over 90 percent for his college career. Silatolu posted 97 knockdown blocks and had 24 touchdown-resulting blocks.

When scouts brought him to Hurney’s attention, the fuse was lit.

“When you put on the tape, you can just see. He puts a lot of opponents on the ground,” Hurney said.

“Everything you heard about the guy was positive. When you look at somebody and you’re trying to evaluate somebody playing at a Division II level, you look at him to dominate his competition and that’s exactly what he does. He has that temperament.”

Hurney said it was important for the Panthers to add a quality offensive lineman when the opportunity presented itself. Though they’re likely set at tackle, Silatolu will shift to guard where both Hurney and Rivera expect him to have no problem adjusting to the pulling responsibilities he’ll have.

While Rivera said Silatolu doesn’t look like a 320-pounder – “he looks like a slender 290,” Rivera said – there’s a nasty edge to the way he plays.

Asked to define nastiness in an offensive linemen, Rivera said, “A guy that finishes. The way a guy handles a defender. Before you know it, he’s putting him on his back.

“You see guys driving a guy into the pile and keep driving and all of a sudden that pile starts to go forward. That’s a nasty finisher. That’s what I look for. When I was a player, when you see a guy finishing, now he’s in your mind. You’ve kind of got your head on a swivel. You don’t want to get picked off by a guy like that. He has that kind of temperament.”
