Defensive back Reggie Smith’s four-year tenure with the 49ers officially has come to an end. The Carolina Panthers announced Wednesday morning they signed Smith in free agency.

Goodson, who ran for 501 yards and three touchdowns in three seasons with Carolina, became expendable after the team signed free agent running back Mike Tolbert earlier this offseason. The 6-foot-6, 315-pound Campbell played in four games for the Raiders in 2011.

Bengals make first move, sign Wharton

Four days after being released from the Carolina Panthers, Travelle Wharton has signed to play with the Bengals. There are no immediate contract deals for Wharton, who recently visited the Rams. A pair of former Carolina Panthers defenders say Panthers’ players would reward teammates for big plays, but it was not the bounty system the New Orleans Saints are accused of using that paid players for hits that knocked opponents out of games.
