| Cam Newton Quickly Moving into Carolina Record… | |
Cam Newton(notes) and the Carolina Panthers have been the perfect marriage thus far, with Newton completely reinventing the Carolina offense. With that revival, the rookie has made a huge splash in the Carolina record books for single season performances by a quarterback. With five games left on the schedule, their are a number of Carolina single season records that could easily fall. Keep in mind that this is all being done by a rookie. As a huge Carolina Panthers fan that has seen every quarterback and every game ever played by the Panthers, I can tell you that he is the cream of the crop overall. Some may argue that point, but to me it is not even close. Here are some interesting notes about Cam Newton’s magical 2011 season thus far: Cam is primed to have only the fourth 300 completion season in Carolina Panthers history. He sits at 239 completions through only 11 games and is almost certain to pick up enough to cross that barrier. Currently he sits at number nine all time in Panthers history for a single season, and the all time mark is 343 by Steve Beuerline back in 1999. He is averaging 21 completions per, which puts him right on top of the record by season’s end. Newton just passed the 3000 yard mark for only the seventh time in Panther’s history during week twelve. His current total of 3093 puts him at number seven on the all time list already, and he is steadily going to climb this list as well. Beuerline’s team record of 4,436 yards in 1999 leads the way. Cam is averaging 281 yards per game, so it will be close if he stays on the same pace. More likely, the team will focus on running the ball more. I do not think he will break this record, but he will break the 4,000 yard mark for only the second time ever in Panther’s history. Cam Newton already averages 7.9 yards per pass which is good for a tie with Jake Delhomme(notes) for the best in Panther’s history for a season. Cam Newton’s 464 rushing yards ranks him 24th all time in Panther’s history already. Keep in mind that this is against running backs and not just quarterbacks. His 10 rushing touchdowns already ties him for third place all time with Jonathan Stewart(notes). DeAngelo Williams’(notes) record 18 in 2008 could legitimately fall if he gets hot. While these are not the only records that are sure to fall, they are some of the more notable. Cam Newton has been spectacular and these numbers prove it. For those that have hated on Cam from the beginning, I guess an “I told you so” is in order. The man has been simply phenomenal. *All statistics were taken from pro-football reference.com and yahoo sports. *Southern is a huge NFL and Carolina Panthers football fan that has followed the team since the very beginning. He still thinks that Tom Brady(notes) is the enemy and that Steve Smith will win a Super Bowl before it is said and done. Note: This article was written by a Yahoo! contributor. | Former Carolina Panther Making Good in Miami:… | |
As a huge Carolina Panthers fan, I remember all the former players that come through here. The quarterbacks are particularly easy to remember, because they usually were pretty bad. When Kerry Collins(notes) left the Panthers, it took quite some time to get used to not seeing him under center. When Jake Delhomme(notes) left for Cleveland, he was a shell of his former self. When Matt Moore(notes) left in free agency, it was a little bit sad to me. I was one of the guys that championed for Matt Moore here in Carolina, and thought that he got a raw deal. Now, Matt Moore is starting to look great for the Miami Dolphins. I have to admit it makes me happy for him. Matt Moore was the guy that Panthers fans always felt was “waiting in the wings” to get his shot. After the meltdown of Jake in the playoffs against the Arizona Cardinals, and a similar start to the regular season and injury the following year, Matt got his chance. He came in to close the season with flair, and was the toast of Carolina coming into the 2010 season. He ended up playing horribly and giving way to rookie Jimmy Clausen(notes). Ultimately, he was led out of Carolina unceremoniously and headed to Miami. The Dolphins did not see what they had in Matt Moore either right away, but he worked hard and got his shot. After a shaky start, Moore has pulled it together and won three games for the previously winless Dolphins. He is doing it through a number of ways, but accuracy is one of the biggest. In Carolina, Moore was known to have a big arm, and he had a knack for the big play at times. In Miami, he has continued that strong arm, but now has added big time accuracy to the mix. It has led the Dolphins to not only three wins, but three big wins. As Matt Moore makes his bid for a starting position with the Dolphins for the 2012 season, I wish him the best of luck. He was always a popular player here in Carolina and I always felt he had more to offer than we ever got out of him. For better or worse, Matt simply did not work out in Carolina. Now that he is in Miami, I hope that he continues to have success and help the Dolphins to become respectable once again. Note: This article was written by a Yahoo! contributor.
