Bengals make first move, sign Wharton

Four days after being released from the Carolina Panthers, Travelle Wharton has signed to play with the Bengals. There are no immediate contract deals for Wharton, who recently visited the Rams. A pair of former Carolina Panthers defenders say Panthers’ players would reward teammates for big plays, but it was not the bounty system the New Orleans Saints are accused of using that paid players for hits that knocked opponents out of games. Mike Minter, who played safety for the Panthers in 1997-2006, said during his years in Charlotte veteran players would offer cash bonuses for momentum-changing plays, particularly on special teams.

Report: Jeremy Shockey Will Not Retire

Carolina Panthers tight-end Jeremy Shockey will return to play in 2012, according to ProFootballTalk. While some previous reports from team officials made Shockey’s NFL future unclear, sources with knowledge of the situation told ProFootballTalk that the Pro Bowler “isn’t calling it quits.” Shockey, a 10-year veteran, will be a free agent in March. Last season for the Panthers, he had 37 receptions for 455 yards and four touchdowns.
